Alice Benvie Gebhart is a native Rhode Islander, born and bred into an artistic family.
Her father as a painter and her grandfather a wood carver, she was surrounded by the energy that a creative family had to share. Encouraged as a child to draw, sculpt, and paint she attended various art classes starting very early in life. Her father was her first teacher and she became a proficient oil painter under his guidance. She states, “It is important to me as an artist to combine the joy of creating with a satisfaction in the outcome. I loved the painting process but was really not satisfied with my finished pieces. With my dad’s artistic spirit as a springboard, I experimented with a variety of media over the years including printmaking, ceramics, and ultimately found my journey into glass.” Benvie Gebhart’s first experimental designs for her glass creations were derived from little paper collage landscapes she had assembled during a college design class. They were encouraged by simple tree shapes and winding highway roads. The colors were vivid, the shapes were simple and they were her transformed into her first attempts at fusing with glass. Her work has transcended into a visual poetry of light and color using the vibrancy, radiancy and transparency of the glass to her advantage. She works, not to mimic nature, but to explore the inspirational quality of the landscape.
The landscape, specifically trees, has continued to be a main focus in Alice Benvie Gebhart’s glasswork. The subject of “trees” has been found in art and literature throughout time.  They are symbols of the branching of family; ancestral heritage and solid relationships.  The tradition of planting a tree has become a symbol of a rite of passage such as the birth of a child, a first home, or honoring the life of a loved one.  Trees provide food and shelter for wildlife as well as shade and comfort for human beings.  The importance of trees can be found throughout every culture and religion.    “The glass construction and firing process of my kiln formed glass is reminiscent of the ritual of planting a tree and watching it grow.  I am reminded of a poem by Mary Oliver: Around me the trees stir in their leaves
and call out, "Stay awhile."
The light flows from their branches. I pose to move the viewer to stay awhile, to see the light and movement and beauty and color in my glass creations. The creation of this work becomes my own private rite of passage by continuing the family legacy in kiln-formed glass.”

In this video lesson Alice Benvie Gebhart, glass artist and international educator, will take you through every step of her process for building and layering a glass landscape. This video lesson will introduce you to simple design techniques and will give you a basis for color choices that you can utilize in all your art glass.  Follow along with Alice, through the many chapters of this video as you work with her to create a glass landscape from start to finish. Learn how to grid your photo as a means to transfer the basic foreground, middle ground and background to your glass.  Make individual design and color decisions by implementing tools such as pinterest, color wheel computer, and color scheme test tiles.  This video tutorial will give you the tools you need to incorporate cut glass; make powder wafers;  form, melt and implement vitrigraph stringers; add scrafitto with black enamel and use gold overglaze to make a piece that doesn’t just copy the artist’s vision but allows you to have your own voice. Students will also learn how to make a glass billet for a base and will explore other display options to take your piece from foundation to professional completion.

I love Alice's video presentation! She does an exceptional job creating movement and excitement in her glass landscapes, and I cannot wait to jump into my own projects. As a painter, Alice does a wonderful job explaining the process of choosing color. She breaks down the process of adding the elements step by step in an easy to follow manner. I especially liked hearing her thought process behind the choices she made. I highly recommend this video!!

Alice has such a lovely way of sharing information. I’m so impressed with both the content of the video and the quality. Her use of Frit is masterful and this class will be viewed often due to its inspirational information. Both AAE and Alice hit it out of the ballpark with this video!

I've been struggling creating trees and landscapes in pieces of glass for so long. I saw that she was teaching at Warm-Glass in the UK but the class was fully booked so I went about finding as much as I could about this teacher and where I could learn from her as there weren't any other classes coming up on Warm-Glass until next year.
I came across this video purely by chance and bought the video straight away. Alice is a truly inspirational teacher. She is so thorough about the way she explains how to do a particular technique. She is amazing and her work is out of this world. Love her. Thanks AAE.

What can I say about this video? It is absolutely amazing!
I can NOT stop making pieces with this technique now! I even have applied some of my own creative ideas to it. The only problem is....I can't seem to get to the final step of enamel application because I'm too busy making more!!
Do yourself a favor and spend the money for this video. You will be glad that you did!

I was lucky enough to take this class in person! Alice is a great instructor and very detail oriented. I was thrilled to be able to purchase this video class to refer back to when working on my own pieces. This lesson provided great camera angles and offered close up demonstrations that are harder to see in a classroom setting. Hopefully Alice will do more video classes at AAE!

Alice graciously shares not only her technique but her entire artistic process with us in this video. From start..choosing subject and color palette...to finish...layering the glass and using other mediums to enhance your work...Alice takes us step by step towards a beautiful finished product. I got everything that I need to get started on my own landscape project from the video. And as a bonus, if I do run into trouble or have questions I can turn to her newly created Facebook page just for students of this video. If this is your interest, don't hesitate to purchase this video.

I am so ready to get to work on my own landscape in glass! Of course, Alice makes this all look so easy, but I feel I am trainable enough to be able to create my own. It was difficult to follow what she was doing at times because the camera angle was head on instead of being shot from above. This was especially so in the beginning when she was marking the glass for the background, middle, and foreground. I got it but it was just more difficult to follow at times. I appreciated the painting analogies. though I’m not a painter by any stretch, it just made it easier to understand. I also appreciate artists showing how to display the art. Thanks for a great presentation and for sharing your knowledge with us!

Alice’s fused glass landscapes was all that it took to make me jump into fused glass. After buying a kiln and watching a few videos, I was left with many questions. I wanted a behind the scene look at her creative process. I was thrilled to hear she teamed up with AAE to produce an instructional video.
I just got done watching it and am totally satisfied. The video provides the insight and give me the confidence to move forward with my landscapes.

    Thank you Alice!
