We are so excited to have Evelyn here at AAE Glass! She is a Bullseye e-merge finalist this year and a gifted artist and instructor. Do not delay on signing up as this is sure to fill fast and where else better to be in the Winter months than Florida?
This is an amazing approach to pate-de-verre that has not been taught here before...students create a free-form Calla Lily from glass paste without the use of a mold. Hand-sculpting using pate-de-verre (glass paste) techniques is very different from traditional pate-de-verre methods. The first two days will be devoted to creating a calla lily. Students will learn how to mix glass paste to the proper consistency so that it can be shaped both by hand and by using simple tools. Once the initial shape is made, students will learn to refine and add details to the form, and will learn how to prepare the piece for firing. The final two days will focus on creating molds using nontraditional materials. Students will bring personal or found objects to learn how to make molds, and then use glass paste and glass powders, to re-create these objects in glass. The final pieces may be incorporated into a 3-D composition. Students will learn firing schedules for complex pieces, learning how to account for shrinkage, varying thicknesses, and the way in which heat affects individual components. These characteristics require special consideration when creating successful firing schedules.
