Date: March 19 - 22, 2019
Time:10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Skill Level: Intermediate - Advanced (Must have basic fusing knowledge & experience and also be able to cut glass without assistance.)
When glass is exposed to adequate heat work in the kiln, it seeks a thickness of 6mm. This principle, in combination with simple engineering ranging from stacking glass to placing glass on an incline, can be exploited in a variety of ways - many which are still relatively unexplored. In 2005, Nathan Sandberg was one member of the team of Bullseye Glass Co. technicians working with internationally known ceramic aritst, Jun Kaneko, on a massive kilnformed glass project. In the years that followed, Nathan was tasked with developing curriculum in kiln glass that built upon the discoveries made during the Kaneko Factory Exchange.
In 2019 Nathan will present his updated version of the Original “Go With The Flow” workshop at AAE. This will only be the second time it has been offered on US soil. Classroom time will be spent considering how glass moves and how we can use flow to our advantage. Principles of flow, deformation anddisplacement will be exploited. One project will result in a decorative dropout vessel while the other will produce a sculptural thick wedge that . demonstrates flow within a larger volume of glass. A variety of smaller samples/tests will also be produced. Coldworking is an integral part of working with flow. Post firing activities include demonstrations and plenty of worktime to refine surfaces and edges via coldworking. The coldworking skills learned in this class are applicable to all types of kiln glass projects. All are welcome, the only prerequisites are the ability to cut glass and a willingness to experiment and take risks in the kiln. Please note that every effort will be made to finish all projects in class but students may find it appropriate to put the finishing touches on their projects in their own studio post class.
